Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishaan

Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishaan

samia10
On every Saturday night, millions across the country are glued to watching Meri Zaat Zara-e-Benishaan (MZZB) a TV drama that is a cross between a Jane Austen/Thomas Hardy novel and Teen Aurteein Teen Kahaniya. However, no one can deny the fact that each episode leaves you wanting for more.
After Lahasil and Doraha, novelist Umera Ahmed’s MZZB is no less than stellar. Directed by Babar Javed and produced by 7th Sky productions, MZZB is about the clash of traditionalists and modernists. The larger than life egos of the elders topped with misogyny, twisted thinking and misunderstandings that end up ruining many lives. The misuse of Quran ki qasam is also highlighted in the serial and shows how fallible beings use the holy text to their advantage without realising the implications and repercussions that come out of it.
The story opens when a young girl, Sara (Sarwat Gillani), shows up unannounced at Arfeen Abbass’s house, informing him of her mother Saba’s death. In flashbacks, we are told as to how Saba is pursued by her cousins Arfeen (Faisal Qureshi) and Adil (Adnan Siddiqi) and it’s the former whom she also adores. However, Saba faces strong opposition from Tai Amma, played by Samina Pirzada and her astute husband, played by a seething Khayam Sarahadi. What follows next is a web of intrigue spun by Tai Amma and her daughters that ultimately results in tarnishing Saba’s character and her divorce from Afreen. The story moves on and focuses on the present where the characters that were pivotal in Saba’s downfall are repentant and willing to make amends.
With Sara and Haider’s (Imran Abbas) romance blossoming, a twist in the tale comes when the former disappears after her Nikah and as a result, some old secrets come into light but not in a pleasant manner. There is a scene in which Saba is beaten mercilessly by her uncle that could have been done more subtly. While the director maybe trying to portray reality, the whole shout fest just solidifies the notion that it is okay for a man to beat a woman to show his dominance.
Over all, there are two stars of the play. Samiya, with her strong theatrical background, had garnered a fan following in an earlier outing when she appeared in PTV’s Zard Dopahar. She comes from a family of illustrious stage artistes, namely Azra Butt and Zohra Sehgul, who rule on both sides of the border. Samiya is a powerhouse of a performer and does not disappoint as the long-suffering Saba.
On the other hand, it is Sarwat Gillani who is a revelation. While the curls are gone for sure, the actress has a new-found confidence and in each frame she shines. From portraying the bewildered look of someone fighting with circumstances to portraying the feelings of a budding romance, Sarwat carries herself with panache, proving that she has come a long way from her non-quintessential role in Jo Baat Ghar Mein Hay and the serials and TV host stints that followed.
Production wise, the play is almost perfect except for the fact that the director could have done better in terms of depicting the time periods. In the flashback scenes that are set some 20 years earlier. The clothes do not confirm to the fashions of the 80s while yet another glaring glitch is the vehicles used. Not a good idea showing a late 1990s model in mid 1980s. Keeping these minor follies aside, Baber Javed has done a good job. Having a huge star cast which includes Khayam Sarahadi, Samina Peerzada, Adnan Siddiqui, Faisal Qureshi, Imran Abbass along with Samiya and Sarwat, it would not be wrong to say that each actor is well suited to the character he or she portrays.
Last but not the least is the haunting score of MZZB that has been superbly sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The title song pulls at your heart strings and is getting plenty of air time on radio and music channels. The video had quite a large number of hits on YouTube before it was removed due to a copy right claim.
MZZB is one of the most watched dramas at the moment and given the way it is discussed at social occasions and on web forums (something worth checking out) it seems that the MZZB mania is going to stay for a long while. Watch this saga of human emotions if you are in a mood for some quality performances over the weekend but do keep a tissue box handy.

Jamal was also part of Madiha Gohar's team that has a mission to educate the poor masses in Pakistan through plays. So they do English stage plays (I wonder what's the English literacy rate in their poor audience).

In 1984 he established the Fine Arts Department at the University of Balochistan and headed the department for three years. in 1985 he formed the Artists Association of Balochistan and became the first Chairman of Artists Association of Pakistan.

Tv Drama Actor Tauqeer Nasir

Tauqeer Nasir

Tauqeer Nasir’s style of acting can only be termed as top notch. The way he immerses himself in any role is a feat that perhaps only few can claim to master. Initially it was the ever-sulking ‘angry young man’ image that shot him to stardom. But, over the years, he has matured and has given fine performances in a variety of roles.

From an angry young man of Parwaz to a rustic village Robin Hood of the blockbuster Rahein, Tauqeer Nasir has been able to dish out hit serials every once in a while. In a nutshell, he has proved his mettle as an outstanding actor with a remarkable versatility.
• Born in Dera Ghazi Khan, he got his early schooling from D.G Khan and Multan. Later he joined the Mass Communication Department of the Punjab University and did his masters in 1981. But journalism was not his cup of tea at the time as the army uniform used to fascinate him. “The army khaki always attracted me. So joining the army was my dream. I did try to translate my dream into a reality but to no avail,” he states animatedly.
• Arif Waqar took the audition and luckily I was later selected for the main role of that serial. I was to perform the role of a son while the late Saleem Nasir played the role of my father.
• The rest, as they say, is history. He performed wonderfully in Panah, Aik Haqeeqat Aik Afsana, Samundar, Dehleez, Dard Aur Darman and of course, Parwaz. However, initially he considered acting as only a hobby. “At first it was only a hobby for me. And gradually it became a passion for me,” he describes.
The period from 1975-90 is in his view the “golden period” of PTV as everyone used to put in a great effort to produce something special. But he is not very disappointed about the present state of affairs of PTV, as he still believes that it is producing standard stuff.
He prefers softness in addition to melody in music. He has developed an ear for music icons such as Mehdi Hasan, Lata, Noor Jehan, Ghulam Ali, Nusrat Fateh Ali, and also Fareeda Khanum. As for pop music, he has little praise for it.

Asma Anwar.
Released Oct 2001
Description:The plays begins with the death of Fawad Ali Syed’s (Talat Hussain) only son Adeel (Zulfiqar Shekih) and his wife in a car accident. Fawad is the owner of a huge castle and vast property and hence his lawyers contact his surviving relatives to come over to Scotland so that Fawad’s new will can be made. The relatives: Fawad’s first cousin Nayab (Samina Ahmed) along with her mentally retarded son Fayez (Rehan Sheikh) and her cousin Munawwar (Nayyar Aijaz), Fawad’s second cousin Yousuf (Shakeel) and his daughter Chanel (Tasmina Sheikh) and grandchildren of his two cousins, Sumeet (Asma Anwar) and Armani (Bilal Ahmed). Armani also brings along his good for nothing friend Arsil (Humayun Saeed). And the fun begins!
The castle is reported to be haunted and many hilarious and interesting events happen to the new arrivals there, especially to mamu Munawwar. Meanwhile the new comers are also told the legend of the castle, where it is said that some priceless diamonds are hidden. This appeals to mamu and Arsil and both start searching for them. Also in between everything, Armani falls for Sumeet and both Arsil and Fayez fall for Chanel. Chanel, however cannot stand Arsil, but does have a soft corner for Fayez. And Sumeet is in love with her class fellow Asher. Poor guys from Karachi, life is just so tough for them in Scotland.
It is also revealed here that Nayab and Fawad had once been engaged and Fawad had broken that engagement to marry his scottish wife. This fact does not settle too well with Yasmeen (Shagufta Aijaz) who is Fawad’s lawyer and in love with him. Fawad arranges to get Fayez treated and as this is a play, Fayez becomes a normal person. When Chanel and Fayez get close, Arsil decides to play the villain to bring them apart.
Humayun Saeed is brilliant in his role of an uneducated, streetwise person and steals the show. The mamu’s character is well written and Nayyar Aijaz is doing hilariously well in his paindu mamu character. These two characters make the play worth watching. Both the new comers are doing well, though Bilal is at times pretty stiff. Other than speaking with an accent, Tasmina really doesn’t have much to do and her acting is wooden as always. A definite watch if you simply want to relax and unwind after a long day. -by Gina
